Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Sach O: Darkstar – North October 18, 2010
Sach O’s got this or Roc Marci for album of the year. Hyperdub can do no wrong right now. Even amidst a landscape of forward thinking labels constantly reinventing the genres they’re operating in, Kode 9’s imprint stands out in its dedication to absolutely bleeding edge sounds. This year alone has seen a synth colored […]

According to Skream, the Magnetic Man album is hitting #4 on the UK charts. While I can’t universally endorse anything that could potentially be embraced as Trance-Step, I will admit that a few of their tunes are guilty favorites and I hold no grudge against the group. If anyone’s going to make money pimping the […]

The Man of the hour, Mr. James Blake has a new video for the first single of his upcoming album. Douglas Martin tells me that it’s a Feist cover and I believe him because the alternative would involve listening to Feist in order to confirm that tidbit. I’m dedicated to this blogging shit but even […]

Thank you very much, Sach O’s billing till Thursday. Alternately known for British rap icons (Roots Manuva, Wiley, Jammer) and extreme left-field US Hip-Hop (Majesticons, Anti-Pop Consortium, cLOUDDEAD), Ninja Tune offshoot Big Dada records rarely ever aims for the conventional Hip-Hop crowd. Even by the experimental standards of contemporaries Def Jux or Stones Throw, Big […]

Question: what do you do when your record label turns 20 just as the style of music you’ve pioneered enters its renaissance? Answer: you throw a party, preferably a big one. That’s just what seminal “abstract Hip-Hop” label Ninja Tune is doing with their massive Ninja Tune XX box set, a whopping 6 CD collection […]

Let it not be said that The Bug doesn’t wring every bit of life out of his productions. Going on 3 years since London Zoo, the riddims on that album are still paying dividends, probably because none of Kevin Martin’s aggro-minded Dubstep followers have been able to surpass the blend of darkness, anger and rudebwoy […]

Sach O: Shed – The Traveler September 29, 2010
Sach O101011101110011110111001010101001011 I recently asked the motley crew of musicians, writers and ne’er do wells that make up the PoW version of the Mind Squad if they felt their musical tastes had shifted in recent years. The responses were as diverse and insightful as anything else I’d read recently, but for the most part there […]

Sach O’s the masked avenger…here to sharpen your swords (one). Forest Swords must’ve slipped through the cracks here at Passion of the Weiss HQ. I don’t know how it happened exactly, you’d think a project best described as “dubbed out cinematic psych-rock” would have a bunch of us playing rock-paper-scissors for a chance to cover […]

SachO SachO SachO SachO SachO SachO Sa Sa Sa Sa SachO SachO SachO… Sometimes a lack of context can be revealing. When I played DJ Nate tracks for an unsuspecting friend, his first reaction was to assume that this was the work of some avant-guard art-wank working out his issues with post-modernism through rap samples. […]

Fuck you, Sach O won’t do what you tell him. Motherfucker. Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled debut is the best rock album of the 90’s. OK, it probably isn’t but that’s not nearly as ridiculous a statement as some of our more “tasteful” rock-crits would have you believe and it’s certainly less of an exercise […]
