Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Sach O can review books too. This one’s out of print but a quick Google search should help ya… Sometimes, it’s nice to be wrong. And in many ways, Kodwo Eshun’s More Brilliant than the Sun – Adventures in Sonic Fiction was as wrong as possible. A loving testament to the possibilities of futuristic Black […]

Sach O will get really excited about this stuff if producers start getting French emcees to rap on it. Mafia K1 Fry maybe? I don’t know why I’m biased against French House but let’s face it, I don’t listen to or write about much French House. I love classic French Hip-Hop and rank the country […]

Son Raw would like to thank DJ Vilify and Bass Drive for having him last night. My brain is currently ground into a fine alcoholic paste after headlining last night’s Bass Drive Wednesday. While Jeff enjoys the stoned magnificence of Low End Theory, Montreal’s reader poll-winning mid-week Dubstep showcase is better known for highlighting the […]

Sach O is a fuckin table. You think you’re sick of hearing about Odd Future? Ask Tyler. Artists hating their own success is a well-worn trope, but the burning glare of the hype machine has never been so swift and vicious: the kid hasn’t even released a CD and yet he’s become the single most […]

Sach O prefers his Pavilions Flux to Merriweather Post. Still haven’t listened to Panda Bear’s Tomboy, highly doubt I will. As important as Animal Collective are to other people, their whole pastoral, hippie, art-school thing never quite jibed with me and their electronic explorations never seemed that impressive when compared to say, Aphex Twin or […]

Sach O is waiting on the Dusbtep Happy Mondays. James Blake was too precious, Katy B too inessential – will Jamie Woon be just right in the great Bass crossover sweepstakes? Not quite, but with Mirrorwriting he delivers just as strong an effort as his fellow BRIT school peers, distilling his influences into a smart, […]

Sach O would review another album but all he listens to are Rinse, mixes and singles. Badman graphic designer, even badder-man DJ and all around good dude Construct from J’Aime le Dubstep just sent over this mix by Belgian producer BunZer0, suggesting that I check it out. Given that his site posts many fine mixes […]

Sach O is staunchly anti-Monarchist with the exception of Mantronix – King of beats. I’d somehow managed to avoid any mention of that accursed Royal Wedding for exactly 6 minutes today until my RSS feed inconveniently reminded me that the entire country of Heng-land is currently losing their shit over some hereditary fooferah. Needless to […]

Butterz is the label. While Night Slugs and Hessle grab more headlines in the EDM world, London’s top new Grime imprint is busy connecting the streets to international bass massive by breaking barriers and going places others won’t. Following an outstanding first quarter that saw the release of two top rated singles in Royal-T’s “Orangeade” […]

Catch Sach O on your rooftops. Why hasn’t there been a quality feature or documentary about Pirate Radio in London? 60s drivel and Vice don’t count. The UK needs to get their shit together, New York’s been living off this kind of sepia-tinged nostalgia for a minute now and Fab 5 Freddy looks like he’s […]
