Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Sach O thinks that song title/credit list is a mouthful. Now here’s a curve ball. Essentially crafting a full-on Funky House jam out of Philly gunners Starkey and Curly Castro’s Marvel backpack epic “Gamma Rays,” production duo The Elementz haven’t so much made a V.I.P edit as an entirely new track. Ironically, while Starkey’s self-proclaimed […]

Sach O had a chill weekend, bro. A lil’ Sunday night special for those of you too tired/stoned to be doing anything else at the tail end of the weekend. I have no idea who K1 is but this free beat tape has been floating through the twittersphere today and it’s definitely a cut above […]

Sach O is all about that gwap. My day job and tonight’s Passion sponsored round-table on Montreal bass music prevent me from writing in detail, but in yet another random move, Wiley’s given away the instrumental version of his upcoming Ninja Tune album. Vacillating between Garage, MF DOOM meet Neptunes funk and Ragga digitalism, it’s […]

Sach O is surprised his neighbors haven’t killed him yet. Their ceilings must be rattling. Mala commands the kind of awe among Dubstep fans that goes beyond simple respect into the realm of sheer idolatry. The kind of musical presence that has your annoying old uncle yelling “Clapton is God” years after the fact and […]

Sach O shouldn’t be writing before coffee. I suppose if I’m up posting this early on a Saturday, I should say something about the untimely passing of Gil Scott Heron. I’m not a fan of writing obituaries for people I never met so I’ll keep it brief: look past all of the “forefather of Hip-Hop” […]

Sach O speaks primary colors. He’s not fond of British spelling though. Kromestar is a DJ’s producer. His tracks are long, evolving lockstep affairs that feel custom-made for a selector’s able hand and for a massive sound system’s rumble. Paradoxically, he’s also on his third album after 2008 dread-bass infused My Sound and 2009’s heavy-metal […]

Sach O has a hard time separating his Garage and Garage Rock Mp3s. When they’re not releasing the weirdest videos ever, Butterz continue to dominate my listening. “Boo You” featuring P-Money and Blacks is their first vocal release and manages the rare feat of dusting off an old style without sounding dated or too self-referential. […]

Sach O is ‘Arkore. As if to prove my previous assertion that paid mixes face heavy competition from the web, Fact had seminal 90s breakbeat mainstays 2 Bad Mice drop an awesome 70 minute clinic on London proto-jungle via instrumental Hip-Hop…aka ‘Ardkore. While Ninja Tune style downtempo found a niche audience on this side of […]

Sach O’s influences are peerless. Convincing anyone to actually purchase a legit mix CD is in 2011 is no easy task. I don’t care if you’ve got DJ Muhammad-Imad-Bruce-Lee mixing nothing but unreleased Burial and Jeff Mangum dubs (he’s killing it on the white labels!), getting people to part with their guap when Fact Magazine, […]

Sach O thinks there might have been something in his drink. Admittedly, I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here. When I think of Swindle’s Moodswings, I think of classy drinks in nice bars, fine looking women and a certain air sophistication. This video on the other hand, features an epilepsy warning, a 3 eyed […]
