Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Shut up! This is Son Raw’s playground. Funk is like porn: you know it when you see/hear it. But while too many acts spend hours upon end noodling with filters and plug ins to make their newest cassette tape sound like background music from a late 80s infomercial, far too few musicians are actually innovating […]

A video for those among us who prefer acid trips to shopping trips and apocalypse raps to designer label name-drops. Light on swag and heavy on low end, please.

Son Raw can’t be bought in cash. Maybe in strippers. For those who aren’t keen on my EDM writing, perhaps my close association with Hesk through ventures such as Project Sundays might seem like a conflict of interest – writers shouldn’t be dallying with artists and the such. Insiders will be quick to attest however […]

Son Raw is basking in the afterglow of Mala’s live set last night at Igloofest. Soundcloud snippets don’t usually warrant posts around here but Addison Groove’s upcoming release on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons label isn’t your usual release. As one of the few producers working in England equally adept at deep, sci-fi influenced Dubstep as he […]

Son Raw is the message, the medium, the content and the platform. The first thing you learn in a 100 level communications class is that the medium is the message, or at least that’s what we learn in Canada. We’re very proud of Marshal McLuhan. You see, he was a theorist who…ok I’ll stop before […]

Yo Dawg, Son Raw heard you like mixes so he found a new mix to promote that new mix. In a year where electronic music enthusiasts had to deal with the ignorant and near-pedophilic youth-obsessions of bloated, aging leeches that pass as “music journalists,” watching them desperately try to save their vanishing print-media careers by […]

Sach O is a fan of The Booty Bakery It’s very hard to impress me with chopped up R&B vocals in 2012 and yet, here we are. I have to admit I was skeptical: 90s R&B is trendy, Juke is trendy and the name +Bongiovanni+ lands closer to a designer Kanye would name-drop than I […]

Sach O would like to shout out Dan Love and Zilla Rocca for that epic New Year’s Eve. Aaaaannnddd we’re back, I think. New Year’s Eve was truly excessive and so your friendly neighborhood Passion of the Weiss staff are still shaking off the cobwebs. Seriously, had the word “epic” not been appropriated by PBR […]

Sach O is the East Coast promoter man. Flyer on the sidebar aside, I haven’t been promoting Who Da Coldest NYE too hard on this site. This is out of respect for Jeff Weiss’ baby but mostly because studies show that none of you guys both live in Montreal AND come out to raves. And […]

Sach OoooOOOooOO is forming a darkwave band. We’ve already handed in our year-end ballots so I’m calling it: first great single of the 2012 musical year. Opening with a Blockhead/DJ Shadow style psych-folk sample before a crunching guitar breakdown (!!!) leads into a Jungle-Juke workout, this is some Heart of Darkness voodoo shit right here. […]
