Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw wouldn’t suggest crowd surfing at a Dilla tribute night. iPhone footage from last night’s BadBadNotGood tribute to J Dilla at The Belmont in Montreal won’t do the show justice but it’ll have to do for now. All you need to know? These kids are the real McCoy and they brought the jams in […]

Son Raw: From Jack to Juke February 10, 2012
From Jack to Juke: 25 Years of Ghetto House from Sonali Aggarwal on Vimeo. A quick but thorough history lesson straight from the horses’ mouths. Rightfully placing Ghetto-House in America’s storied tradition of urban music rather than in a more nebulous international dance music context, this documentary makes a strong argument for discussing Chicago, Detroit […]

Son Raw is an urban hippie minus the long hair and overly-sincere attitude. OK, just urban then. Some groups are easier to like than love and others are easier to love than write about. LHF falls in the later category as RZA-influenced junglist beat music will be awesome long after bloggers have run out of […]

Son Raw felt sort of obligated to post about this. Damn blog hype. So he’s releasing music but isn’t part of Odd Future anymore? Is that what we’re supposed to infer from yesterday’s is-he-or-isn’t-he clusterfuck? If so, that’s a shame as both parties could benefit from working together far more than whatever will come of […]

Son Raw really wants to tour Japan one day With New Epoch, Japanese producer Goth-Trad has created a rare beast: an album providing plenty of top-quality DJ-food for selectors that also stands up as a straight-up front to back listen. It’s a tough trick to pull off as the extended intros and breakdowns inherent in […]

Son Raw was bored so he made this. If aggregating Hulkshare links can be considered “making something.” Newsflash: rap beats almost always sound better when emcees rap over them, so while Araabmuzik’s Instrumental University may be of great interest to aspiring swag rappers from Harlem to Houston Street, there’s not much there for the rest […]

SirReal – SUB SESSIONS 01/27/2012 by Sirrealnesss on Mixcloud Son Raw bruked out to this one. Upon sending me this, Charlottetown DJ SirReal said he didn’t know if “I was into mixes.” That’s actually a valid line of inquiry – there’s only so many hours in the day and when DJs make up half your […]

Son Raw is sick. Bring him some soup, damn it. Guido’s 2011 was so quiet that we almost forgot about him after a brilliant debut album. Anidea is still a startling listen, the kind of auteurist release that still stands strong after the fall of its micro-scene and one that undoubtedly justifies Guido’s forthcoming attempt […]

Son Raw was going to slam that shitty Rusko X Cypress Hill song, but what’s the point? Jeff was a bit optimistic yesterday in describing Electronic Music’s current forward drive as there’s more than enough nostalgia for yesterday’s futurism to go around these days. Much like it’s ancestor Jungle, Dubstep evolved so ridiculously fast that […]

Son Raw doesn’t know if all of these will drop this year but he hopes so. Also, Schoolboy Q was supposed to make this list but son dropped his album already. I was right about that one so I’m probably right about these.
