Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw’s on the West side of Chicago looking for a bust down. It’s tough to keep up with the underground Juke/Footwork movement if you aren’t actually part of it. My homeboy Hesk (more on whom later) will happily name-drop half a dozen producers who’ve apparently made incredible tunes but I’ll be damned if anyone […]

Son Raw is not talking about the music video director in this review. You know what? Fuck Hype Williams. I was beyond ready to diss this record. A formless bunch of trendy musical signifiers (Asian Pop, R&B, Juke) badly recorded to tape by arty scenesters who’ve enraptured the British music press by essentially acting like […]

Son Raw would prefer the aces, wouldn’t he? Swagger for days. LiveLoveA$AP continues to demonstrate substantial replay value, proving that a well crafted, original project will always trump a barrage of buzz-building stopgaps. Though it would be all too easy to fuck it up with poorly chosen production or sell-out moves at this point, all […]

Son Raw’s getting into some real bad things. It’s impossible to overstate the impact of Addison Groove’s Footcrab single. Previously best known for his slow, technoid Dubstep as Headunter, Tony Williams not only re-launched his career with his Chicago-London fusion piece but also helped ignite outsider interest in Footwork and synthesized a direction for Loefah’s […]

Son Raw comes from a distopian future You might remember Flow Dan’s booming baritone from The Bug’s best tracks and if you don’t, you should probably check out London Zoo – AKA the only album that can give Funcrusher Plus a run for it’s money when it comes to distopian cityscapes. The Roll Deep member’s […]

Son Raw can’t breathe The economics of dance music don’t favor production. Why spend hours upon hours crafting tracks that will be instantly bootlegged on dodgy Russian forums when you could be touring the world stacking that show money? The wise DJ keeps his tunes exclusive: keeping your arsenal close to your chest ensures that […]

Son Raw is in love with a Goth girl. In which XXXY synthesizes both the zeitgeist of Bass music’s thousand plateaus and the history of his home town. After all, is there anything more Mancunian than spontaneously igniting a bouquet of decaying flowers to a sadly emotive yet somehow still euphoric House track called “I […]

Son Raw is trippin off that lean…because he has the flu. Admittedly, I’m in the perfect state for Spaceghostpurrp’s music: fucked up, groggy and more than a little medicated. Unlike some other records I’ve been listening to for the past 24 hours however, I have no doubt that Lustful 97 will stand up to sober […]

Son Raw’s Sunday morning mix is brought to you by Wheaties and Power Plant Kush Sometimes, in my more “lifted” moments I wonder if anyone who reads this site is actually interested in everything we post. Not every single post mind you but the gulf between my selection Douglas Martin music is wide indeed. As […]

Son Raw‘s looking at the night sky. Mr. Mitch is another Grime producer who’s been putting massive amounts of work which is now coming to fruition. His Beatfighter blog has rapidly become a must-see destination for DJs looking for new talent while his most recent single “The Last Stand”  is a thunderous production that takes […]
