Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw is the dream within the dream within the potential Inception sequel. No, I haven’t abandoned beats and bass lines for the sensitive sounds of the singer songwriter. Despite a name befitting a James Blake successor alongside a baby face and EP title to match, Joss Ryan provides the latest incarnation of the UK’s […]

The day we lost MCA May 4, 2012
Sadly the rumors appear to be true: Beastie Boy Adam Yauch AKA MCA has passed away at the age of 47 after a protracted battle with cancer. As readers of the site might guess, this is absolutely devastating for our motley crew of long standing Hip-Hop heads and we’ll be taking some time to write […]

Son Raw has extraordinary swag. Because rapping in front of the Eifel Tower is the new rapping in the hood. Also, because rap videos are so much better when they’re not safe for work. I last wrote about Rocky’s lead single in the pressure cooker constraints of the we-got-it-first blogosphere pressure cooker but repeated listens […]

Son Raw is the rare rap Jedi. Def Jux: powerful in life, unstoppable in death. I have no idea what Aesop Rock is talking about in Zero Dark Thirty but I do know that he makes it sound fly, a crucial component to his rhyming that was all to often forgotten by his successors. Hardcore […]

Son Raw just punched an old lady while listening to this. In which my favorite active rapper spits bars over my favorite style of production. After months of casually referencing his love of Grime, Danny Brown finally delivers his outstanding collaboration with UK producer Darq E. Freaker, splitting the difference between Crunk-style ignorance and London […]

Son Raw’s month in MTL April 30, 2012
Son Raw spends most of his months in MTL. Book him in your city for a nominal fee. Lots of interesting music gets made in Montreal, particularly over the Winter months when nobody wants to leave the house for fear of yetis. Unfortunately, I don’t always have the time to properly document all of the […]

Look at him now, look at him now…Son Raw‘s grading papeeeerrrrrssss. Some additional mixology for your weekend. Night Slugs cofounder Bok Bok’s official mix can and must be described with the following words: funky, neon, rude, sexy, future-forward, dubwise, underground, London-centric, druggy, grimy, urban and perhaps most importantly: essential. Sometimes it’s best to forget about […]

Son Raw’s out in Brussels, eating clams and mussels. When you make your big break by providing beats for Lil B and Soulja Boy, evolution is imperative. Not to belabor the point but those two are clearly better at recognizing potential in up and coming producers than umm… rapping, so it was a welcome relief […]

Son Raw isn’t trying to affiliate himself with no fake-ass A&Rs. Where to begin? Weighing in at 144 minutes sans bonus tracks, LHF’s Keepers of the light can be a slight bit intimidating in a genre where releases are usually constrained to 2 track singles. Do you devour the whole thing in a blunt-aided marathon […]

Son Raw thinks this post would make a great shlock horror film. Radio rips usually don’t merit the full-post treatment here at PotW but then again, not every radio rip contains a new Girl Unit song released on Night Slugs, his first since his anthemic Wut nearly tore a hole in the  space-time (‘ardkore) continuum. […]
