Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

God Forgives, Son Raw don’t. Soo… Rozay’s new album is going down like a 3 day old, triple-stuffed burrito. Doubts about freshness abound and you can’t help but wonder if his whole steez is past its expiry date. Even if you thought Rich Forever was great with its umpteenth B.M.F remakes, do you really have […]
Son Raw didn’t know this was online. As I mentioned earlier this week, I’ll have the honor of playing a special 3-hour set at Montreal’s Piknic Electronik – AKA the most fun you can have on a Sunday afternoon in this city, on July 29th. Without spoiling anything, expect a monster tour-de-force performance from yours […]
Don’t get it twisted, Son Raw hasn’t seen Molly in a minute. Quick history lesson: back when E was all the rage in Europe, rave music became increasingly frenetic, euphoric and (let’s face it) cheesy. Everyone knows that part of the story, but what happens next is the real interesting bit: as the drug addicted […]
Son Raw don’t like your kind, you a bougie hoe. Lunice and Hudson Mohawke have apparently had enough of canny interlopers borrowing bits and pieces of their swag for the purpose of multi-million dollar rap hits. To be honest, I’m not too sure what they’re talking about: the dialogue between their luminescent brand of bass […]
Son Raw would like to share a few thoughts. Domo Genesis carries weed but he clearly aspires to more than weed carrier status. While I wasn’t particularly impressed by his contributions to the OF Tape 2, that’s probably due to the project’s general lack of focus and sub-par production. Rolling papers was dope but that […]
Son Raw never saw so many people smiling because of music so pardon him if he gets a bit personal today. This is part show review, part confessional and mostly him just getting it all out on paper. We’ll return to your usual brand of snark and mockery ASAP. Full disclosure: had The Digital Mystikz […]

Son Raw is Mr. Blunted. Since the entire American interweb is currently in a post-fireworks haze (no Brooklyn, “Post-Fireworks haze” is not an appropriate band or genre name) it seems right to post something from across the pond. The Mista Men are a production duo who’ve been making some noise recently with releases ranging from […]
Son Raw is rocking a Public Enemy shirt and outrunning the Terminator. Dubstep’s best producers now lord over the “genre” from above, releasing Earth shattering missives while lesser beatmakers resort to gnarly dance music for candy kids. Burial’s Kindred EP was this year’s emotional peak while Mala’s forthcoming Cuba Electronic promises to redefine swing and […]
Son Raw is in the lab or lambo, Kangol or camo. I actually really liked Azealia Banks’ 1991 EP despite the fact that everything about her public persona makes me want to hate her (fish) guts. The truth is, if you rap well at a fast pace over good production I’ll forgive you for both […]
Son Raw may break his no blunts before breakfast rule. Rough morning. What makes a musical genre? The typical answer would be a common set of musical signifiers and in a commercial sense, that description works quite well. If you’re selling a product, it helps if the customer gets what’s written on the tin. In […]
