Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw refused to use the word Grimegaze in this post… but not in this byline. Yesterday, I briefly touched on the defeatism of cleaned up, revivalist dance pop so it’s encouraging to hear a free project that flies in the face of that approach so thoroughly as to stand as an obvious counterpoint. London […]
Son Raw is reminded of Michael Bolton, pre Lonely Island ironic comeback. I was going to go in on Disclosure’s new album but frankly I can’t even muster up the hatred to tear this thing apart. In truth, it’s far from a train wreck and I’m not sure if any of these tracks could even […]

Son Raw will abide no cursing and foul language. A genre’s vitality can be measured by how fast and how often it’s willing to reinvent itself. When movements and musical signifiers linger too long or worse, refuse to change altogether, things get boring but when the music evolves so quickly that multiple strains and ideas […]
Son Raw is jetlagged. Do not adjust your monitors – I’m actually posting on Passion of the Weiss again, much to the chagrin of those who hate Grime music and to the joy and/or slight interest of those who do. Having spent the past three months abroad with little to no access to new music, […]
Son Raw wrote this while sipping a Singha. Bass music intellect Kode9’s latest single, “Xinfu Lu,” is ostensively named after a Shanghai clubbing street. Pardon my skepticism, but after spending the past few months in South-East Asia, I doubt any club on the continent is ready for this. In fact, it’d be a hard sell in […]
You merely adopted the dark, Son Raw was born in it. In a year where London frets over shuffling crazes and the Internet takes its dance music cues from the Boiler Room’s overly mediated experience rather than the real thing, Keysound’s This is how we Roll is an outlier. Defiantly local, stubbornly difficult to pin […]
These haters can’t hold Son Raw back. You’ve gotta love Hyperdub. It would be all too easy to sit back and count stacks every time Burial drops a new single, but so far, the label has all but avoided the easy path, searching far and wide for artists as likely to confound as to engage. […]
Part 2 of Son Raw’s continuing look at London’s best radio station. Part 1 here. Dubstep: The cream of the crop Dubstep has seen better days on Rinse, as London’s sound of choice has found itself out of favor amongst listeners dissuaded by the anti-cool factor that comes with being America’s soundtrack to take drugs […]
Son Raw’s been wanting to write this for years Pre-recorded podcasts may have more polish and The Boiler Room might have the benefit of a live crowd, but tune for tune, there’s nowhere better to hear fresh urban electronic music than London institution Rinse.FM. Starting off as a Jungle pirate in the mid 90s, the […]
Son Raw holds the cards close to his chest. Here’s a dirty little secret about commercially released mixes: often enough, they’re far less interesting than what you can get online for free. While a good radio or Boiler Room set is spontaneous and full of unexpected moments spurred on by crowd and twitter reactions, a […]
