Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw bus up di dance Did somebody say Dancehall revival? In truth, Jamaica’s musical exports never went away but Bashment is a style that thrives on creative destruction: every decade the whole style switches up, old heads complain and then a few years later everybody rediscovers it. Popcaan and Vybz Cartel are as different […]
Son Raw is the ghost of Garage’s future. I was going to tune in to Dusk and Blackdown’s monthly Rinse show live last Sunday, but good weather and a picnic opportunity got in the way. They’re English, I’m sure they’ll understand the appeal of an honest to goodness sunny day. Besides, this is the podcast […]

Son Raw doesn’t need no stinkin’ late pass. The first rule of reblogging/curating/whatever is to disregard anything over a day old, but I’ll make an exception for this mix the Young Echo collective made for Fact Magazine a few weeks ago. To misquote ODB: I’m not saying you missed it, but if you missed it, […]

Son Raw: does whatever a spider can. Slackk: Eskimo enthusiast, purveyor of thickly accented radio chatter, arachnophile. I’ve already said my piece regarding the music he’s been playing on Rinse, but he’s recorded another session so I’m compelled to repeat myself: these beats are great and you can download two hours of music for free. […]

Son Raw – with trepidation Zomby might just be the most idiosyncratic producer of his generation, and that includes the ghost of Burial, the paladinesque Mala and the mercurial Shackleton. Whether trolling his twitter followers, indulging in high art or chastising the world for not recognizing the brilliance of street music from Jungle to Trap, […]
Yeezus Pieces: Son Raw June 18, 2013
Son Raw is the new Shabba. First up, I’m not going to concentrate on what doesn’t work on Yeezus. There’s plenty of arguments against this album, and based on the comments so far, I’m sure you guys will happily point them out and/or get pissed off at me for even suggesting it’s any good. But […]

DJ Rashad gives no fucks June 17, 2013
Son Raw bumps jams like this before breakfast. I have just been informed that DJ Rashad, in fact, gives no fucks. This goes against previous counts that placed the number of fucks given as slightly higher than zero, so we should all breathe a sigh of relief now that this egregious error has been corrected. […]
Son Raw wrote a rap review I was slightly concerned for Action Bronson. Blue Chips was an amazing breakthrough displaying a world class persona with a surprisingly experimental edge, but a character as large as Bronson’s can easily calcify in the public eye. Despite working with one of rap’s best active veterans in Alchemist, Rare […]
It’s Son Raw, again, he’ll turn up with a fat on again. Butterz on Rinse: half short and twice strong. Though the crew’s radio presence has once again folded into Elijah & Skilliam’s flagship show (with alternating hosts Royal-T and Swindle), this week’s episode definitely qualifies as a must-listen and a potent reminder that they’re […]
Son Raw is cold just listening to this There’s a frigid current flowing through Grime’s veins circa 2013. Maybe it’s a reaction to the (admittedly awesome) dayglo futurism of the Butterz camp, but it feels like every day there’s a new release celebrating the lo-fi weirdness of the genre by splicing its genetics with Industrial […]
