Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw wants to know why you smoking reggie? It’s impossible to listen to the music DJs Rashad, Spinn and Earl are making these days without making connections. Connections to the records they sample – 90s Hip-Hop classics like Lyrics to Go,  Luchini and C.R.E.A.M get atomized and accelerated along with the classic soul platters Chicago […]
Son Raw isn’t sure how he feels about this one. Despite Kanye’s best attempts, Doris will probably go down as the year’s most contrarian rap album. Those expectations you have for Earl Sweatshirt, rap’s golden child anointed in absentia? Get rid of them – he wants nothing to do with this shit. No crowns, no […]
Bok Bok and Kerala go R&G August 9, 2013
Son Raw seen it like 27 inch Zenith – believe it. I called it two years ago: instrumental Grime is having a moment. While Big Room House continues to make inroads into the UK pop charts, the underground is erupting with new talent finding inspiration in the twisted synths and broken drum patterns perfected by […]
Son Raw is sipping on a Blue Mountain roast. My day job precludes me from coming up with more words, as it requires most of the words I’m able to generate in a day, but I highly recommend this latest mix from Mumdance, coming just over a month after his recent Twist & Turns opus. […]

The Corrections is a series where Passion of the Weiss staff writers listen to a classic album that they somehow never heard. Round 2 comes courtesy of Son Raw. So why have I never heard Rounds? Well gather here children and let me take you back to 2003: Bush was invading Iraq, 50 Cent was […]

Wen’s Hedmuk mix July 29, 2013
Son Raw isn’t easily impressed I don’t usually bother with other blogs to find new music. If it’s big, the majors  will pick up on it, if it’s small then it won’t make it past Soundcloud and if it’s rap, someone here’s covering it. Hedmuk is the exception: a small UK outlet that’s gone above […]
Son Raw sees you lurking More ultra-dark, gunshot festooned beats from ‘di man like Visionist, this time on Berlin-based electronic label Leisure Sounds. This probably means we’re about 6 months away from dark instrumental Grime becoming really cool and its inevitable absorption into the all-consuming Berghain sound. The Teutonic dance hive mind does not fuck […]
Son Raw is posting bare videos. We are in rap’s reductionist phrase: less words per bar, simpler beats and atomized ideas re-arranged into near infinite combinations.  Footwork maestros Rashad and Spinn know this and abide: if rappers ain’t saying nothing there’s no reason to listen to a whole verse when you can loop the best […]
Son Raw is bringing back Eek-a-Mouse Good rap music, no more no less from the Early Man and friends, complete with a video with far more loitering than anything on Loiter Squad. I know the music press never really got over Tyler punking them with Goblin, but No Idols, Channel Orange, Wolf and now Doris […]
Son Raw is gonna bring back Bounty Killer What does it say about the state of rap when partying  in a mansion no working man could ever afford feels like a quaint throwback to kinder, simpler days? Don’t ask me, I’m too busy enjoying Ferg’s Mortal Kombat references to really care. Besides, I’m sure Joey […]
