Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Boxed takeover Rinse October 3, 2013
Son Raw can’t be boxed in. How can you tell if a Pirate Radio show is relevant? Well if the 90% of the Twitter shout outs are to producers huddling in front of their radios to hear new tunes and the other 10% are me, chances are you’ve hit a winner. Last Sunday’s Boxed takeover […]
Son Raw‘s got a lighter up in the air. I have no idea what Guido’s been doing for the past few years. Reaching level 99 in every single Final Fantasy game in the series? Watching too much Anime? Arguing with Joker about the merits of mauve? Who knows, but thankfully, the wait is over and […]
Son Raw is a gawd. No pastries required. Reconfiguration is the word to play in UK dance music right now. Long past a single-genre singularity and finally distancing themselves from the post-everything soup of “Bass Music” that characterized the Dubstep diaspora, today’s producers are combining Afro-Caribbean riddims with London darkness, Grime’s sparseness to bassweight and […]
Son Raw has gone through 150+ war dubs this week. Please stop. In case I haven’t made it obvious, Visionist is a shoe-in for my producer of the year. Equally beloved by Grime’s new wave and the amorphous East Coast beat scene coalescing around acts like Nguzunguzu and Fatima Al Qadiri, he’s slowly developed his […]
Grime goes to War! September 13, 2013
Son Raw is filing a war report. Warning: this is a long post. Two days ago, producer Bless beats set off a Grime war of epic proportions, sending for half a dozen producers via twitter. The reasons behind his initial aggression is unknown, but what began as a one off barb quickly spiraled out of […]

Jessy Lanza’s Analog Charms September 11, 2013
Son Raw might have a schoolboy crush here. Pop eats everything, but that means anyone can co-opt pop. Pull My Hair back, the debut album by Hamilton Ontario’s Jessy Lanza could be categorized as 80s revival, alt R&B, Post-Dubstep and half a dozen other subgenres. But at the end of the day it’s a pop […]
Son Raw tried, he really did. Because I’d rather post a 7 year old radio session than review the new Skream single. What can I say,  I rate rap music ’cause I never dug disco. Download link and a Mala and Pokes live set from Fabric after the jump for the archeologists out there.
Sega Joker Drive September 3, 2013
Son Raw‘s smoking on that purple kush. You can call it a comeback. Joker’s first run of tunes in the late aughts was truly special, injecting a heavy dose of funk and color into a scene that was on the verge of drowning in its own darkness, but his subsequent pop-ambitions didn’t quite hit their […]
Son Raw Radio August 30, 2013
It’s been a long time, Son Raw shouldn’t have left you without a hot mix to step to. I’ve apparently joined a radio show. This isn’t some slacker-baiting turn of phrase – I literally didn’t plan this shit out. After a couple of weeks of guest spots for my homie Rob Habit’s late night Nasty.FM […]
Danny Brown channels ODB August 28, 2013
Son Raw can relate to your album title, bruh bruh The march towards OLD begins, laying to rest any doubts regarding Danny Brown’s focus. Much has been made of DB’s Fool’s Gold assisted, dance-music backed rise to fame since XXX, with a conservative faction decrying his shift towards higher tempos and molly music. Personally, I’m […]
