Son Raw
Son Raw is Passion of the Weiss’ resident expert in Urban Electronic sounds, which means that he specializes in music with a lot of air horns, gun shots, broken beats and laser sounds. Having written about Hip-Hop, Rare Groove, Bass Music and Grime and having DJ’ed everywhere from Los Angeles’ Low End Theory to Paris’ Rinse France and London’s NTSLive – we figure he knows what he’s talking about.

When asked to describe his musical philosophy he mumbled something about musical viruses and “searching for the next fix" before concluding that sunshine does indeed play a major part in the daytime.

Son Raw just hit 500 followers. He’d like to thank the academy. He’s also lazy at recruiting followers. Like Mr. T, I pity the fool who attempts to categorize the madness put out by Hyperdub at any given moment. Kode9 is busy confounding European tastes by combining Juke with Trap, DJ Rashad and Spinn are […]

Son Raw is 8-track only Livity Sound is a growing concern. What started as a vinyl-only label for Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu to explore intersections between Bass Music and Techno has since grown into a festival-favorite live project and a musical collective that’s carved out its own unique space, one that’s acted as a Trojan […]
Son Raw will be in Europe next spring. Can’t come soon enough. Butterz just turned 5 this weekend, celebrating with their first Room 2 takeover at Fabric and a 4 hour Rinse session with more or less every major producer that’s ever graced their presence. Looking at that photo, it’s a bit hard not to […]
Parris on a mission October 29, 2013
Everyone’s going to be at Fabric and Son Raw is just sitting here in Canada. Parris is a name I’d seen thrown around with Wen, Moleskin, Rabit, Beneath and other up and coming DJs at the periphery of Grime/UK music’s new wave, but without a release or even much completed work on his Soundcloud page, […]
Son Raw was in second grade. What happens when the past sounds more like the future than the present? I’m not entirely sure, which is why I’ll save my review of Special Request’s (AKA Paul Woolford’s) always thrilling but sometimes slavishly conventional Soul Music for another day. For now, let us bask in the wonder […]
Mr. Mitch – Suave MOFO October 17, 2013
Son Raw lives for the funk but dies for lack of good weather. The funkiest man out the Boxed crew, Mr. Mitch might also be the producer least beholden to Grime’s past among a cluster of artists seeking to redefine London’s millennial sonic boom. Having already made noise through the anthemic Skittles on Butterz and […]
Oneman holds all the cards October 15, 2013
Son Raw does this for the culture. At some point this season, you will need a turn up mix for  when you’re having drinks, lest you leave the house sober: you should probably make it Oneman’s latest. Whereas London’s finest already effortlessly combined Garage, House, Grime and Dubstep into an all inclusive smorgasbord of UK […]
Son Raw makes 2 Live Crew look like some Mormons. Danny Brown ended XXX with a pained howl that would have made a fitting epigraph had drugs, violence or jail snuffed out his promising rap career. Thing is, that didn’t happen. Against all odds, the skinny jeans-wearing backpack-rapper with a blown out haircut and encyclopedic […]
Son Raw’s in the fast lane. I spend most of my time here writing about Grime out of personal interest, but let there be no doubt that over on the other side of the Atlantic, Juke/Footwork is just as vital a musical form. In addition to its revitalizing impact on Drum & Bass and foundational […]
Son Raw is floating on a Kush cloud. How far can you push street music before it becomes something else entirely? This is what goes through my mind when listening to Houston-based producer Rabit’s Sun Showers EP, a release that pushes up against the limits of dance music’s structure all while making use of its […]
