Evan Nabavian
Evan Nabavian is a staff writer for Passion of the Weiss, contributing since 2011 when the powers that be blackballed him for slandering Lupe Fiasco (Lupe, if you’re reading this, I am so sorry). His distinctions include being cited by name in the Wikipedia article for “Ride” by Ciara and having his kitchen depict a crack den in a Freddie Gibbs video. In 2012, he was banned from S.O.B.’s in New York following an altercation where he questioned the tenets of real hip-hop. In 2014, he shared a Pulitzer for interviewing the ghost of Tim Dog. He’s @MooseXL on Twitter and his email is his name at gmail dot com.

Evan Nabavian ate a gallon of astronaut ice cream to prepare for this article. Between Bossman, S.L.A.S.H., and G-Mane, I’ve lost count of how many rising Huntsville artists there are who can be billed as the city’s secret weapon, but PT Prime Time is yet another. It’s hard to brand him as a rapper-producer or […]

Evan Nabavian rocks a Bunsen Honeydew chain. There are two kinds of Waka Flocka songs. Songs about death and songs about asses. “Round of Applause” is the second kind like “No Hands” before it. But while “No Hands” is a loathsome synthy booty jingle, “Round of Applause” is a desolate booty nocturne. Lex Luger provides […]

Evan Nabavian’s favorite old school rapper is Silver Fox. If the golden age of New York rap was about ghetto scripture and taut piano loops, then the silver age was about concealed weapons and glorious Tunnel bangers. The former usually earns more homages from revivalist nerds, but Noreaga and Alchemist return to the heyday of […]

Evan Nabavian holds the memory of Aaliyah’s midriff sacred. My roommate in college listened to Graduation and Tha Carter III on endless repeat. To this day, he never misses a Lil Wayne concert. One time I played him Flying Lotus’ remix of “I Feel Like Dying” and I could almost hear the whirr of confusion […]

Evan Nabavian never once caught that swag flu. The Slaughterhouse boys do better outside of their battle rap pissing contests. All of them except for Joe Budden are capable of extremely memorable performances given the right direction. Royce da 5’9” can scorch a DJ Premier beat like few others. So can Joell Ortiz (“Project Boy”), […]

If you need Evan Nabavian he’s upstate, but not on the Riker’s Bus. Common? The black guy from Wanted? The one who did that romantic comedy with Queen Latifah last year? He raps? Are you sure? Yes, Common was once a rapper. And long before that, he was a good rapper. If you can’t remember […]

Evan Nabavian is in all likelihood, one of the best forever. DJ Khaled’s ringtone is his 2010 single “All I Do Is Win.” T-Pain’s voice reverberates down the closed off Miami street and Khaled answers like a customer service rep, with a casual, “We the best.” He starts peppering Cool from Cool & Dre about […]

Kool Keith – The Game Is Free (Feat Megabone) from Junkadelic Music on Vimeo. Evan Nabavian wears capes but won’t go near a sequin. Kool Keith wears a sequined burqa and a cape in the video for “The Game is Free.” He’s joined by an obscure group called Megabone who also dress like the rebellious […]

Evan Nabavian blew a kiss to Halle Berry at the Beanie Mac concert. Here’s a modest outline of my perfect day. I wake up next to the actress who played Hermione in the Harry Potter movies and she makes me an omelet with mushrooms and hot sauce. Then we wrap ourselves in my Ghostbusters blanket […]

Evan Nabavian may or may not have that zan with that lean. Ludacris and Bun B are outstanding rappers whose output is polluted with filler and trash. In the case of Bun, the cause is his compulsion to give a verse to anyone who asks nicely. His ubiquity seems to come from a place of […]
