Ben Grenrock is re-watching The Office for the eighth time.
Heralding spring’s influx of sunshine and skin, U.K. producer and recent Brainfeeder signee Ross From Friends has released the breezy first single off his forthcoming EP, Alphelion. Entitled “John Cage,” the track reclines supine in the sand somewhere between hip-hop and house music, at once relaxing and addictive.
Perched atop psudo-samba rhythms and a thick, fluffy kick drum, airy keys and diced vocal samples encourage the specific breed of optimistic head-nods that can only occur in an individual who knows the worst of the year’s snow, slush, and rain is behind them. With all the warmth of a summer sun but none of the glare, the track is light without being frivolous, simple without feeling stripped down, and laid back in way that effortlessly captivates one’s attention. Due out on April 6th, if Alphelion features the same sort of carefree resplendence Ross With Friends has so effortlessly harnessed on “John Cage,” the EP is sure to soundtrack its fair share of forthcoming pool-party dance offs and beach naps, alike.
