Since 2015, Soundcloud rap has transformed from a derisive adjective to a driving force in pop culture. This year saw many semi-surprising overnight stars emerge from that murky and amorphous underground that gives the term meaning. While there are plenty of year end lists and mixes celebrating the rise of rappers like Pierre Bourne, Trippie Redd, and Playboi Carti, I made this mix as a celebration of those artists and songs dwelling just below the surface level of popular culture or those that form the architecture of this scene that continues to refuse definition.

While properly staying on top of the internet underground’s sounds is nearly a full time job, I spent enough of the year unemployed to say I’m on top of some of the cultural pulse, or at least a few arteries. Even at 26 songs long ,this mix is a nice, even length that still fails to check all of the microcultures (I’m sorry sybyr and sowhatimdead).
