Chris Daly let the beat drop.
Another week passes us by, and another hip-hop classic celebrates a milestone birthday. The time to consider 20 years of otha fish in the sea was back in 2012. Today we pay homage to Labcabincalifornia, Pharcyde’s follow-up to their debut which was released way back on November 14, 1995.
Whereas Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde demonstrated the inherent playfulness of the group, Labcab showed the grown-assed side of Fatlip, SlimKid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani. For many fans this was a turn-off, but in hindsight, it’s hard to deny how strong the album is. First off, you’ve got two of the group’s best tracks in “Drop” and “Runnin’.” Let’s also consider that 7 of the 17 tracks were produced by the one and only J. Dilla. This was before he attained his later, well-deserved legendary status.
