Son Raw’s heading to some islands.
It’s approximately -20 here in Montreal, and while we’re missing out on Winter Storm Beatport, the urge to dance away the winter malaise gripping our city is strong. You can only hide from the outside world by hunkering down in a studio for so long before you run out of food and beer, and braving the cold either requires music so frosty Mobb Deep’s Havoc might sample it or better yet – something high energy enough to get the blood flowing.
Tee Vish and Jenna G bring the latter on Don’t Hold Back. Calling the percussion “tropical” might be cliché, but it’s also accurate and the fact that it’s almost 10 beats per minute faster than your typical housey shuffle makes it party music you can actually party to, rather than a soundtrack to selfie stick abuse. It also comes courtesy of Manchester’s Big People Music, which endears it to me even more – any city that shares our exceptionally harsh weather and desire to forget it through dance gets props over here. Ultimately though, this is the kind of song that’s fun no matter the weather or place of origin – I’d probably be into more straight up dance music if it was more concerned with making me dance than tuning reverb tails to enhance k-holes.
