To say there was anything “missing” from the original “Go” from Guilty Simpson and Small Professor’s Highway Robbery would be to imply the track wasn’t smoking in the first place. This would be untrue. Spitting over horns, wavering keys and taut snares taken to chiptuned extremes and featuring guest spots by Elucid & Castle, the track rocked with a sinister claustrophobia that mixed perfectly with the duo’s aesthetic. But where’s the fun in leaving well enough alone?
Philly’s own Zilla Rocca has taken the song and added a fuck-you-up approach for the upcoming Remineded: A Collection of New & Old Remixes, due on Coalmine Records this coming January 20th. Replacing the horn intro with soaring vocals and helicopters, Zilla cranks the kick drums and gives a whole new level of grimy to the production. Not content with a static background, Rocca flips the script throughout the track, going from banger levels to more subdued, but no less compelling, around the 1:30 mark as Elucid picks up the mic, transforming the beat into a blunted version of Vince Guaraldi. Still not pleased with what he’s created, ZR changes it up again about a minute later for Castle, going starker still with background synths and robotic percussion.
Sometimes, even if ain’t broke, it still can be fixed.
