Depending on where you hang your hat in the country, you may well already be through with snow and winter, which is particularly a bitch in light of the fact that winter doesn’t even officially start for another couple of weeks yet. With all the powder so many cities already have seen, though, you may be well within your rights to disagree with what some goddamned, arbitrary calendar feels like telling you. If you find yourself in this category, the latest comp by the record label side of Mishka NYC, “Surf N Turf,” might just provide the warm fuzzies you need to make it through another cold, dark, lonely night.
Featuring 38 beat-meisters from all over the United States, including Blue Sky Black Death, Mr. Green, DJ Burn One, The ARE, Steel Tipped Dove, and more, the album was lovingly hand curated by neonpajamas and blackKat. In neon’s words:
“surf. is meant for the beach, for vibrant waves on sunny days. Instrumentals for cloud rap. Instrumentals for smoking excess. turf. is meant for the whip. Cruising late at night through a concrete jungle, a concrete swamp. It’s more boom bap, more slap.”
Whether or not you’re familiar with the names here (some are well established; some are up and comers), Mishka has more than succeeded in compiling two discs worth of perfectly flowing music. More than just background beats, this is what we in the business like to call an “established vibe.” Just don’t ask me what the business is.
No need to go cursing the lack of sunlight and your freaking neighbor who keeps piling his snow into your yard just yet. The sultry vibes of “Surf N Turf” should get you through at least February.
