Will Schube is the panty raider
There’s a fine line between cultural criticism and outright cynicism. Perhaps Father John Misty’s greatest strength, even stronger than his stunning vocal range and tremendous songwriting ability, is his ability to accurately critique capitalistic culture while still endearing himself to a large audience. “Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)”, the latest single from his forthcoming I Love You, Honeybear, is the perfect example of this marriage between the emotional and the scathing. Tillman sings, “I wanna take you in the kitchen/Lift up your wedding dress someone was probably murdered in/So bourgeoisie to keep waiting/Dating for 20 years just feels pretty civilian.”
The musical composition is more expansive than most of the stuff on Fear Fun, something Tillman’s talked about leading up to the album’s release. Horn flourishes and a bossanova-influenced drum groove keep the track pulsing beneath Tillman’s touching ode. The video, co-directed by his wife, was originally going to consist of a kitten wedding, before he scrapped the idea and “made it on an iPad on my wedding anniversary with the one I love.” The video reflects the tone of the song, the fourth production take Misty required, as he was looking for something that wasn’t “perversely sentimental.”
