Whether it’s the Los Angelino-by-way-of-Chicago’s way of saying thank you or the man just needs to cut back on the caffeine, OME is back once again with yet another new track for your ear holes. Keeping with the talk show motif he’s been using loosely to promote “Dark Comedy,” here comes “Late Show,” produced by none other than fellow Californian, Exile. Spitting over chipmunk pitched Toylight vocals, Open Mike opens with a fake TV intro before dropping his by-now-characteristic insightful, comic, caustic and occasionally nerdy lyrics. Who else do you know who is shouting out love for the Spin Doctors AND wanting to fly an X-Wing amidst barbs against the government, multiple Iraq invasions and Ferguson? With all due respect to our Chinese zodialogical experts, 2014 has nothing to do with horses and everything to do with Eagles.

Seriously, somebody needs to tell Open Mike Eagle to take a breather. Depending on which tea leaves you happen to consult, four out of five leading psychics agree that 2014 will go down in history as HIS year. With only an album or two even jockeying for position, Dark Comedy looks like a shoe-in for more Top Ten lists than a month’s worth of Buzzfeed content. Let’s not forget the multiple tours (with the Hellfyre Crew to start the year, finishing up his own solo joint now and headed to Europe for his first ever tour there to take him through November), the slew of videos (“Dark Comedy Morning Show,” the Bill Cosby-less “Doug Stamper” with Hannibal Buress, the Bill Cosby-inspired “The History of Modern Dance”) and a batch of guest verses with some of the biggest and best names in art/backpack/whatever-we’re- calling-intelligent-this-week rap (“Air Pegasus” w/ Aesop Rock, Marq Spekt and Blockhead; “Me and the Mikes” w/ Luckyiam and Myka9). Oh yeah, and to keep things low key, I guess, he started his own podcast, “Secret Skin,” because, you know, he’s got all that extra time between seemingly starring on every fourth episode of “Shots Fired!”
