Son Raw will be mixing tonight on Nasty.FM at 7PM EST – give him a listen.
Mr Mitch was born in England, is plenty accepted in the Grime community and yet his best music often reminds me of something else entirely: the broken, experimental Hip-Hop orbiting Los Angeles’ Low End Theory. Woozy, mournful and unafraid to smash genre conventions to pieces, The Man Waits – complete with Kubrick sampling video – would fit next to Nosaj Thing’s music like a glove, even though its frosty atmosphere is more LDN than LA. As for his actual contemporaries, the closest comparison might be Rabit and Logos’ free-floating tunes, but with more of an emphasis on composition over sound design – there’s plenty of melody here and a sense of mourning and dread that’s perfect for December and January nights. For fans of the Cold Vein instrumentals and next level head nodders.
