On some “want my old shit, buy my old album,” Flying Lotus drops a 330 MB folder’s worth of outtakes, unreleased drafts, and sketches that have been collecting dust. This is a preemptive strike against those who figure to be baffled by his latest left turn. These are scraps, but they’re very welcomed, considering he’s spent much of 2013 in the bunker, recording a new album with his animated alter-ego. A lot of these songs sound like variations of material discarded for Until the Quiet Comes. There’s a few trap songs that he told me he made last year for a trap experiment that never saw the light of day.

There’s a clean version of “Between Friends,” which might be the best song that will appear on no one’s year end list because “Hive” stole the token Earl spot. There is a cut with the Underachievers and one with Baths and one with Ish of Shabazz Palaces. There is also a remix of “Black Skinhead” with the bass god, Thundercat — now with 75 percent more melody. The collection reveals an artist wise enough to know which songs to officially release, but generous enough to drop shit for those who are interested in the deleted scenes. This is the audio equivalent of hobo stew, but it’s pretty tasty. Shouts to Bush pere pulling into the Krusty Burger and asking “what kind of stew do you have.” There is also a song on here called “Stonecutters,” so I feel all Simpsons references fit in this context.
