You might have caught Gates stealing the show on Pusha’s “Trust You.” Let’s immediately dead the idea that he’s ripping off Future. Gates has been doing this since Pluto was a planet and he has his own Jamaica meets South Side of Baton Rouge stomp. This is the video from “Weight” from his imminent Luca Brasi Story. I’ve heard word that Gates might be featured on Wayne’s next single. But that could change the next time Lil Wayne goes to guitar practice. For all we know, Carter V could be all acoustic covers of Sweet Baby James.
In the meantime, Gates smashes “Weight.” He’s a more lyrical and deft songwriter than most trap rappers and he has a more menacing energy than almost any singer out. He’s already a star in Louisiana and one or two songs from breaking nationally. In the meantime, Southern Hospitality spotted the video for “Wrist to Work” from an iTunes-only album that Gates did last September that came and went.
