For all those trapped in the 90s, I invoke MTV’s long-dead Party to Go Series. You say no to the “Club Version” of Heavy D & The Boyz’s “Now That We’ve Found Love,” Juicy J(eff) cant. They say that the music you listened to in Junior High is what ultimately shapes your taste. If that’s the case, I see no reason why you couldn’t love Above the Law and the KLF, Digable Planets and Snoop Dogg. Same goes for 2012, when there’s nothing stopping you from riding for Serengeti and the rise of ratchet rap.
Southern Hospitality understands though and has compiled a mix of their top 2012 Club songs. It is an excellent reminder that as much as many trad-rap fans still complain (and they have a point too), this might have been the best year for radio rap since early 00s. Power 106 regularly plays E-40, Juicy J, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Ross, ASAP Rocky, and Schoolboy Q. That’s a whole lot better than the last three years of Evian and Ecstasy techno-rap. The Passion of the Weiss Top 50 hip hop singles list is coming later this week, and more than a few of these jams are included. If you need me in the meantime, I’ll be the one screaming “THESE BITCHES LOVE MOCHA,” to the barista at my local independent coffee house.
