Dam-Funk doesn’t want to be a star because he never wants to let the ego supersede the songs. Still, he’s emerged as an ambassador for the funk because no one else was going to carry the weight. Like most artists worth paying attention to, he sees himself very much as a humble participant in the lineage. Hence, his homages, praise, and re-appraisal of both superstars and the anonymous. He is as likely to put you up on Adrian Gurvitz as cover Prince, which he gracefully does on a cut from his Stones Throw maxi-single.
“17 Days” was the original B-side to “Purple Rain.” Originally written for Vanity 6, Prince opted to keep it for himself and we won as a result. Over a quarter of a century later, Dam-Funk makes sure the rain still comes down.
