From Jack to Juke: 25 Years of Ghetto House from Sonali Aggarwal on Vimeo.

A quick but thorough history lesson straight from the horses’ mouths. Rightfully placing Ghetto-House in America’s storied tradition of urban music rather than in a more nebulous international dance music context, this documentary makes a strong argument for discussing Chicago, Detroit and Baltimore music alongside Crunk and Hyphy rather than Disco or Deep House. Then again, I did find this link on Resident Advisor so perhaps the battle’s been lost. Nevertheless, the music covered here follows Son Raw’s golden rule of beats: it was made by young urban kids who didn’t give a fuck about mainstream appeal and who were determined to push their own sound forward, which almost always guarantees good stuff.
