Unless you live in Los Angeles, you may not know the name Danny Holloway. And even if you’re a resident, you still might be benighted towards the Dublab selector and crate-digger extraordinaire, whose respect runs abyssal within the DJ world. Holloway is a throwback to the days when DJ’s discovered and broke obscure gems through tireless sifting and impeccable taste. He’s a music historian who wrote for the NME during the glory days of the 70s, a music business veteran, a producer for the Heptones, a film soundtrack compiler and an all-around good guy. More importantly, listen to his Cool & Deadly reggae mix and the need for superlatives goes out the window. Dude’s on-point.

For DJ’s and lovers of all stripes of soul music, Holloway’s Blazing 45 nights are the stuff of lore. The latest installment smokes out of the Echo this Thursday night. Headlined by Rich Medina of Philly and Stones Throw poobah Peanut Butter Wolf,  the evening features sets from a spate of renowned spinners including Rhettmatic, Shortkut, and Holloway himself.  This site gets lots of offers to present events and give away tickets, but we try not to endorse anything that’s not worth your time. After all, Todd Shaw was right. But this should be a night to remember (© Rick Ross.) In honor of the event, we’re giving away two pairs of tickets. If you’re interested, send an e-mail to [email protected] with your favorite obscure soul album. And if you say Curtis, Otis or anything Stax or Motown, you’re not going to win.

Many mixes below the jump.
