Sach O geeked out during this show
I could go on and on about how awesome last night’s Grime-producer allstar session on Rinse was, but by now, that would probably be preaching to the converted. Instead, allow me to briefly explain WHY I’m so enamored with instrumental Grime, despite the lack of mainstream hype surrounding the genre. Point blank: in what other style of music is it possible to get practically every key musician together in one room to jam out?
The original Dubstep massive has blown up too far and wide to ever replicate that 2006 vibe and most Hip-Hop collaborations come courtesy of Mediafire these days but Grime remains local: everyone lives in London and while it took Elijah and Skilliam’s vision to bring them together – the very fact that this happened is incredible.
Over the course of 4 hours, you can feel the magic building in the room as producer after producer drops never before heard music on the air. The highlights are innumerable: a sing-along session to D.O.K’s Missing Step, Swindle dropping his first vocal tune in months and Royal-T unleashing a furious war dub aimed at Rude Kid and Teddy WHILE THEY WERE IN THE SAME ROOM. Not to overhype it, but last night felt like a tipping point moment for this sound – a moment where all the right elements came together and the result was lightning in a bottle. Oh, and look out for the Son Raw shoutout: you know I wasn’t going to let this go down without getting my name on there somehow.
