One more because not all hemispheres are built the same.
Perth is a strange place. It’s a sprawling stretch of suburbia caught between the Indian Ocean and a dry-as-fuck interior — thousands of kilometers from the next major Australian city. It’s constantly derided for being boring as shit (and quite often is), but artists like Tokimonsta or Ikonika can still rock a packed out room. Everything is expensive, there’s only 2 degrees of separation, and the state government doesn’t give a shit about you unless you’re involved in mining or smoking weed. But it’s home.
This mix was my attempt to capture the feel of my city in summertime, when you can see the heat rising off the bitumen while riding around and the air stays warm even once the sun has set. Something to soundtrack the summer other than crickets and Australian hip-hop (yes, we have our own hip hop here, and for the most part it’s terrible, don’t look it up. Except for M-Phazes).
The tape itself features hometown heroes Tame Impala and Shazam, as well as tracks from Dam-Funk, Blu & Exile, Frank Ocean, Darondo and Camp Lo. Stylistically, it’s me trying to emulate the Avalanches tapes I grew up worshipping — how they created actual soundscapes in their DJ sets with forgotten pop and pieces of audio dredged from the bottom of record store crates. It’s that sort of summery strangeness that fits my city so well and I wanted to pay tribute to. — Cale “Sleepyhead” Herbert
