Once upon a time, music was released by these companies called “labels” and people “purchased” it with pieces of paper called “money.” It was a heady era, dizzy with hubris: did you know that Drag-On actually released 2 albums through a multi-national corporation? Let that marinate for a sec. Sadly, that was then and this is now – I haven’t known anyone with money in years. Thankfully however, while the record industry is going down faster than a porn star on the Titanic, a basic cable cartoon channel and a niche car brand are filling the void left by imprints now solely concerned with promoting whatever LMFAO do. Doing a mighty good job at it too, releasing a free compilation of “unclassified” bass music by the likes of Kode9, Pinch, Ikonika, XXXY, Starkey, SBTRKT, Zomby and a few more names cut for brevity, not quality. It’s like if some evil wizard at Cartoon Network invaded my dreams and decided to make me a really awesome mixtape full of exclusives instead of shattering my psyche. I’m not too sure how this business model is supposed to work… I mean, I can’t get American cable and I don’t drive, but if the artists are getting paid, I’m getting it for free and the people shelling out for this are happy, it’s cool with me. Panis et circenses for all!
