All day long on Twitter, Busdriver has been releasing the unofficial liner notes to 10 Haters. He claims “10 HATERS actually is the ultimate recession album. Every facet of it’s inception oozes reckless abandonment and indie grind hunger.” Like most great rap albums, it’s the sound of guys trying to be the best rappers in the world. And they’re like trying to sell it or something.
Impromptu Bus driven liner notes below the jump.
1. Good cop Bad cop – got this beat from @darealdibiase while I was fielding beats for the underheard Thirsty Fish album
2. Beat My Bitch – I retrieved a beat from Nosaj that he put on a beat folder meant for Kid Cudi. After begging him for it, he let me use it. Then Nocando proceeded to come up with the cleverest hook I’ve ever seen recorded in real time
3. I Can Teleport – I wanted to parody 90s underground hip-hop and southern rap tropes. Talking down to hoes about magical teleportation abilities did that.
4. Moisturizer – Nocando got this amazing beat from Mexicans with Guns & I wanted to do a tough song about skin cream. The Dream and the Weeknd inspired my hook. Nocando ‘s verse will forever be the funniest thing that I can withstand.
5. Aphrodite – Thavius Beck produced the original version of this song, but that particular beat already had a home. ESUper remixed it. James talks about his wife in the song, I speak about some fictitious hussy composited from several women I’ve known.
6. Bernie – Niggas wanted to do a dance song! About the Dougie or the Jerk or whatever it is that teenagers do! I actually made up a dance for the song called the ‘Buffer’, but Nocando found it to be too corny. BOOO! …. He was correct in doing so. Even though the Bernie was a bit old, we went with that. We had the chorus sample in place and it was the most hilarious dance available.
7. Perfect World – James had this brilliantly straight forward premise for us to riff on that I fought with all my might. I eventually gave into Nocando ‘s infinite wisdom and we wrote this song within an hour. the beat was bizarre. I’m a huge Mono/Poly fan. We eventually asked Open Mike Eagle to play the voice of reason in all our whining and he ended up blowing us off of the song(well, at least me). My bridge riffs on the term “white girl” which refers to coke. I one up that term by aspiring to sell what I’d like to call “white baby. Nocando’s style on this song can only be described as “modified interrogation of Middle Eastern detainee swag”. Shit goes hard.
8. 10 HATER – This beat made me cry when Free the Robots played it for me. It was so immediate and unrelenting. Nocando came up with the 10 Haters concept in his living room. It both rang true and boasted that biting humor that I need to sustain me. DJ Nobody gave me a very important arrangement note on this song in passing. All of my efforts should be filtered through that man.
9. Hyperbolic – Nocando came with this concept & we both agreed that this would be the song to feature a famed outsider of our liking. We considered Blu, Lil B, even paying for a Lil Wayne verse(the cost of a fleet of used cars)& even wonderful Rob Sonic. We settled on our mutual rap hero Del the Funkee Homosapien who came through & merked the beat in record time… The beat btw is so serious on this song. Shlohmo is beastly. He made the Hypberbolic beat and inspired the randomness on it.
10. Jimmy – This is an older song of Nocando ‘s that I absolutely love. It didn’t have a home and needed one. A few different beats were tossed up in the air for this life-affriming marathon verse. James decided on this Blocade joint to set a tone–a tone that comfortably eases you out of the record and back into your mundane life. It was a very grown up move on his part.
