Evan Nabavian’s favorite old school rapper is Silver Fox.

If the golden age of New York rap was about ghetto scripture and taut piano loops, then the silver age was about concealed weapons and glorious Tunnel bangers. The former usually earns more homages from revivalist nerds, but Noreaga and Alchemist return to the heyday of The LOX on “Slime Father.” Fun fact: when I interviewed CNN in 2009, they told me that they were banned from the Tunnel. They did not say why. It probably had something to do with this.

NORE is a treasure among street rappers because he doesn’t take himself too seriously. That’s probably why he’s friends with Alchemist, a man who recently got TMZ to believe that he’s producing Vanilli’s comeback record. Al supplies the paranoid beat and NORE raps with half-mock gangster enmity about being able to fit a gun in pants that are two sizes too small. He can barely suppress a smile in the video, which has the quick editing of one of those old Nike commercials with the basketball tricks. Women flick their hair and men purposefully rub their hands together. Maybe some of them will notice how hard Cory Gunz is trying.
