Wiley’s never had qualms about being in it for the money. While his frequent temper tantrums also betray his artist’s soul and his love of the game, his releases are littered with paeans to that gwap – or the nearest British equivalent. Numbers in Action is no exception but for the first time in a minute, it seems like the Grime Don Dada (returning to Ninja Tune/Big Dada) is having fun again, as seen in this cheerfully instructional video. It all works better than it should: the sparse snap beat serving his nimble flow well and the paint by numbers approach cleverly undermined by a wink-wink nudge-nudge self-awareness. Plus the chorus has the rare Michael Jackson reference that actually doesn’t suck.
