Sach O is accepting invites for festival headlining gigs.
For all of their academic & underground cred, I harbor suspicions that Kode9 & The Space Ape secretly want to be festival headlining superstars. How else can you explain “Am I,” a fist pumping headbanger of a Dubstep tune with the genre’s biggest hook since “Skeng?” I mean that thing is practically begging for a Skream remix. The rest of Black Sun, while subdued by comparison, still amps up the energy levels from 2006’s Memories of the Future, trading bassweight torpor for a fucked up take on UK Funky that somehow manages to remind me of David Bowie’s Low.
Frighteningly du jour due to Japan’s Nuclear crisis, the album features a loose narrative involving a post-apocalyptic earth, mutants, diseases, multi-colored suns and a fair bit of other stuff I’ll have to unravel once I get my hands on the album artwork. Though I do wish they’d followed their pop instincts even more as things bog down a bit in the back half, Black Sun is still proof that these guys could be the next Tricky if ever Kode9 decides academia and the world’s premiere Bass music label isn’t enough.
