I’ll gladly agree with Jeff that the new Dipsett-spoofing Lonely Island song is infinitely more listenable than Saigon’s dud but don’t count out “that real New York shit” yet. With sales down all around, the impetus to reach for a multi-regional pop hit seems to be waning and that’s the best news in a decade for fans of gritty East-Coast Boom-Bap. I’m wary of all this talk about movements and revivals but if the general concession that “bringing New York Back” ain’t happening means I get to listen to more good New York rap, I’m all for it. This is a prime example: 3 NY emcees, a haunting beat, some scratching and you’ve got a good rap song. This isn’t the wheel 2.0 but it IS a wheel without rims and a rap song without 808s or a cheap 9th Wonder beat so who the hell cares if it isn’t relevant south of the Tri-State?
