Sach O is rolling in the shallow.
Abe Beame’s fearless coverage of Bad Boy’s golden era and Trey Songz’ arthouse predilections frees me to cover more R&B, a development that bodes well for this site’s already robust funk-quotient. My personal affinity for the genre leans towards dance floor remixes, an obvious development but not an unjustified one. At the very least, the current trend of Bass music producers grabbing from R&B may just be enough to save us from English pop’s 689th rehashing of the 60s (yes, we get it already, it was a dope era) that shows no sign of abating post-Winehouse. This remix of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep is a perfect example, Vancouver’s Max Ulis taking a by-the-book vocal-pop number and giving it the hyper-soul treatment, speeding things up and reducing (Copyright Rick Rubin) the instrumentation to a pulsating sub-low and the occasional screwed-flourish. Goes well with a Pre-Valentine’s Day Dance.
