I’ve tended to avoid waxing rhapsodic about English trio, the xx, because the Hype Machine is already arteriosclerotic with purple prose full of OMG’s and/or the phrase “noirish minimalism.” So let’s be real, they’re three precocious kids barely old enough to booze, who possess the rare trait of knowing the precise moment when to stop. Of course, there’s more than that, but one album isn’t enough to tell whether or not they’re going to be anything more than a next-gen version of Interpol, full of tensile bass lines, detached vocals, and the sartorial sense of a goth kid from South Park.

From what I can gather, the chief difference between the two groups (beyond the absence of STD rumors bruited about the xx) is taste. Around the time Antics came out, I read an interview with Paul Banks, where he rambled about the greatness of 50 Cent’s The Massacre. I assume hearing “Candy Shop” upwards of 3,000 times finally drove Carlos D to ditch the others. By contrast, Jamie Smith has spent his downtime remixing Florence and the Machine, Glasser, and compiling this outstanding mix for Collette. Granted, the notion of a mix for a French boutique has my 14-year old self wanting to lock his self in a room with nothing but Wu-Tang and weed. However, Smith’s hour-long set showcases his impeccable taste in dubstep, and a surprisingly seamless ability to mix.  Everyone from big names like Burial, Skream, and Zomby appear alongside up and comers like James Blake, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Joy Orbison. We post a lot of mixes up on this site, but this is of the better ones and a harbinger of better things to come for the guy provided he gets a better haircut.
