“American Nightmare” has made the rounds, but hasn’t garnered the attention it deserves. The lead single from BK-One’s debut compilation, Radio Do Canibal, pares Houston hierophant Scarface with Minneapolis’ Brother Ali, a north-south meet-up as fluid as the Mississippi. The gentle down-tempo pianos angelic gospel choir, and dusty drums form a perfect foil to the weather-beaten and weary verses kicked by Ali and Brad Jordan. There’s anger here, but it only emerges via their words, both men resigned to a certain fatalism that can only come with age. They understand the system is broken, but refuse to accept it. Like all good art, they write because they have to.
