The latest tomfoolery from Lonely Island. If Rick Ross wanted to salvage any last shreds of dignity, he’d have been wise to have done a cameo–of course, that would require a modicum of self-awareness. In some ways, this is more damning than anything 50 did, particularly, the “promoting synergy like a Bawss,” line–an idea also known as the “Hustlin’ Remix.”

I’m perpetually a sucker for videos that channel the bargain-basement grit of the vintage Yo! MTV Raps days. The clip for “Get It Right Now!” the lead single from Del’s free give-a-way, Funk Man (The Stimulus Package), amounts to little more than him smoking blunts in a squalid apartment, and black and white shots of him mean-mugging in a fur-trimmed hoodie. It’s awesome. I haven’t listened to the full album yet, but judging from this single, the best advice is to get it right now.

Exactly. At some point in 1998, this became my favorite song/video from Doggystyle. The amount of money I would pay for bottle service at the Carolina West is incalculable, but only if the Fabulous Dramatics were playing. This is the only way I’d be willing to pay for bottle service. Fuck, I might even spring for Valet. I also wouldn’t mind a friend named Taadow.
For me, Doggystyle > Chronic. This is one of those crucial questions that defines your entire existence. Like Biggie or Tupac, Obama or McCain, Back to the Future I, II, or III.

Not to disparage the man for attempting to get paid–those mixtapes certainly aren’t bringing home the turkey bacon. But this is arguably the lamest thing I’ve seen a rapper do since Meth and Red did those deodorant commercials. Except those were two of the greatest rappers of all time and Mickey Factz is….a guy who drives a Honda Accord. Maybe he can call Kevin Barnes for advice on how to weather the storm?

I’m rooting for the erstwhile Scott Mescudi. Between the appearance on 808s & Heartbreak and last year’s A Kid Named Cudi, he’s flashed enough potential to justify the hype. Plus, he has several things working in his favor: a Kanye co-sign, ability to both sing and rap, a single that has received radio burn, and a Crookers remix that went viral.
Cudi’s Man on the Moon: The Guardians is slated to drop on G.O.O.D./Fool’s Gold sometime this summer, but his odds of stardom remain opaque. The major labels have not consistently proven that they can create stars in the post-Internet world. If you look at the most popular artists to emerge over the last few years, they tend to skew Southern and all built fan bases prior to signing with a major: T.I., Ross, Jeezy, Plies. For every Lupe to germinate, there’s a Rhymefest, a Clipse, a Knux, a Murs, who struggled to sell 50k.
Still, in a rap world continually obsessed with chimerical coketasias, we could use more stoner anthems. Cudi’s ceiling might be Lupe, but at least you’d want to smoke a blunt with him.

Cursory observations from The Kills’ new video:
a) Is it just me or has Allison Mosshart become a rich man’s Meg White?
b) Hotel is becoming more Doherty-esque by the day. Say what you want about Kate Moss, at least she has a type.
c) Marlboro Menthols? Really? If you’re treading down the path of mint-laced refreshment, the wise move is to either keep it grizzly and smoke Newports, or opt for the voice-box, old lady, Benson & Hedges route. The monocle-sporting, Nat Sherman bent is also PotW approved.
The Black Balloon EP comes out next month and I’m amped for the duo’s Coachella date. There’s also an international tour this spring–dates below the jump.
