Passion of the Weiss

No Three Piece Suits or Aladdin Style T-Shirts

July 30th, 2009

Inspired by the last post, I’ve spent a large portion of my morning Youtrolling for old Toddy Tee videos, only to discover a treasure trove of pre-gangsta’ LA electro-rap clips posted up by German scene historians, West Coast Pioneers.

The above Ice-T clip is taken from the 1983 documentary, Breakin’ and Enterin’, set at the legendary MacArthur Park club, Radiotron. Very necessary for anyone into the roots of Los Angeles hip-hop and rhinestones. Below the jump are lots more videos featuring the likes of World Class Wreckin’ Cru, Rodney O and Joe Cooley, N.W.A. et. al. There is also a Converse commercial featuring Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kevin McHale, Bernard King and Mark Aguirre, with beats from the Egyptian Lover. You want to see it.

Sach O - Jay Electronica - Dear Moleskin

July 27th, 2009

If you’re an ex-Rocafella super-producer doomed to work exclusively with crazy emcees, you might as well find one that goes on Tibetan pilgrimages. I’m assuming that this is what Just Blaze was thinking when he decided to get involved with Jay Electronica. Who knows what this is or where it’ll end up, but hopefully it starts a trend of rappers going to the Indian subcontinent to find enlightenment.

The Biggest Freshmaker You’ve Seen Thus Far

July 16th, 2009

I probably could watch eight hours of Rick Ross parody videos a day, and still never get bored.

Foreign Born-”Winter Games” Video

July 15th, 2009

I informed Foreign Born about jerkin,’   but alas it was far too late. Thus, the video for “Winter Games” boasts C-Walkin’ instead. A fine consolation prize. I also appreciate the sepia 80s roller-skating rink vibe.

Live Review: Grizzly Bear at the Wiltern

June 21st, 2009

YouTube user Suprefan has graciously posted videos from both of Grizzly Bear’s sets this weekend at the Wiltern and Troubadour. Their Friday show at the former was one of the best I’ve seen this year, and despite typical Youtube graininess, the videos bear it out.

My review at the Times doesn’t come close to Derek Miller’s  Vecktamist opus, but hopefully does the performance some justice. Every time I see this band it’s nothing short of amazing. More videos after the jump.

I’m Looking for the Bud and the Brew and the Ex

June 19th, 2009

In the wake of the recent and rightful attention paid to Quik and BlaQKout, I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention “Buck Bounce,” his Space Age 4 Eva collabo with 8Ball & MJG. The song that didn’t make either of their greatest hits, but should have.

More on this topic later.

5 0′ Clock Shadowboxers-”Weak Stomach”

June 15th, 2009

The real hyperbole will rain down closer to the June 23rd release date. In the meantime, the Henry Choi-created video for The 5 0′ Clock Shadowboxers project from Zilla and Douglas Martin stands sturdier than any faulty gastrointestinal tract. If this doesn’t make you take these guys seriously, then I’m not sure what will. Strippers? Scones? The Sasquatch? Listen to the lyrics: don’t sleep (or eat) on a weak stomach.

Also, be sure to scoop “Stay Clean” from 2 Dope Boyz, and stay tuned next week–The Slow Twilight is rapidly approaching.

Black Moth Super Rainbow-”Neon Syrup for the Cemetary Sisters”

May 17th, 2009

Stuck inside on a gorgeous Sunday, writing a feature on Black Moth Super Rainbow. The only consolation is that listening to this song inside is a halfway approximation of the halcyon weather. Living vicariously, I suppose. This band is severely underrated.

King Hippo? He’s the King of Losers

May 12th, 2009

If this and the Dos Equis commercials don’t take home Clio’s, the world is an unholy place.  007-373-5963 better work on the new Punch-Out.

Lonely Island ft. Seth Rogan-”Like a Boss”

April 5th, 2009

The latest tomfoolery from Lonely Island.  If Rick Ross wanted to salvage any last shreds of dignity, he’d have been wise to have done a cameo–of course, that would require a modicum of self-awareness. In some ways, this is more damning than anything 50 did, particularly, the “promoting synergy like a Bawss,” line–an idea also known as the  “Hustlin’ Remix.”
