I don’t know about you, but I for one have always been fascinated by the concept of what rappers do with their time off, especially the ones that never release albums. Like what do guys like William Danzini and Fizzy Womack do every day? They certainly aren’t recording. Personally, I’d always assumed M.O.P. spent the majority of their hours playing Scrabble with Lloyd Banks (no, Lloyd, “Fiddy” isn’t a real word), robbing old ladies that accidentally got off at the Brownsville subway exit, and building the website for www.Iwillfuckyouup.com. What I didn’t count on was discovering that they had entered the porn game. The video of Danze talking about “Creepers” is up along with the post at Idolator. It’s definitely worth viewing, though I have to admit that I’m disappointed they didn’t call their film, “How About Some Harder Core?”

I’m aware that it’s reductive to be like, “yo, Slug, why don’t you come out with that Overcast-type shit.” It’s not 1997 anymore and artists need to evolve. I get it. But “Guarantee” is not good. Sure, it’s a noble failure, but c’mon dude, emo rap-rock is not the future, despite what Wentz and Durst might tell you. I’ve scrawled some mean-spirited thoughts at Idolator about the new Atmosphere video. If you need me I’m going to be bumping “1597,” and wallowing in nostalgia.

So I’ve got this big essay on Lil Wayne up at Idolator right now dealing with the nature of hype, one-sided criticism, and the first two singles from The Carter III. It’s something I’ve been thinking about writing for a while but after watching the critical hosannas pour in for “Lollipop” and “A Millie,” I had to say something. I mean “Lollipop” is 3rd rate 50 Cent, the sort of derivative hot mess that would be universally mocked were it not released by Wayne. Meanwhile “A Millie,” is just another mediocre mixtape track with a few hot moments and some really bad ones. At any rate, it goes on for two minutes too long. Yes, there are jokes about Whoopi Goldberg, the “Loungin” video and Peanut Butter Wolf. All in a days work.
