Full disclosure: The majority of my month was spent listening to Pluto incessantly. Jeff would not let me post 15 Youtube links, so listen to Pluto. These are the nine songs I’ve cobbled together but have more or less skimmed in between listening to Future. (Big ups to Miss Info, whose blog makes this feature possible and I would love even if she wasn’t a hot Asian chick who wrote the 5 mic review for Illmatic.)

El-P- Oh Hail No (ft. Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire & Danny Brown):  The good news is the almighty El Producto bounced back with an actual rap album. The bad news is the best parts of Cancer for the Cure (the album, not the Eels song) involve El-P not rapping. El-P has to be the only rapper on Earth I wish would just go back to making songs about “real Hip Hop.” (ed. note: I disagree).  The best part of this song is obviously eXquire, who rips a fucking hole in the beat and has not only never sounded better but exceeds my wildest expectations for him. He is great. And, sorry Internets, but Danny Brown sounds like an feral cat rapping between hits of nitrus isn’t. (editors other note: Sach is currently en route to NYC to refute this statement.)

French Montana- Everywhere we go (ft. Wale): STAY TUNED FOR FRENCH MONTANA’S ALL AUTOTUNE SING RAPPING OVER CHARMELS SAMPLES MIXTAPE HOSTED BY DJ BIG MIKE SUMMER 2012 #YOUALREADY

Brkfst Club- The Fellowship: (Mike Breen voice): BANG! Best posse cut since Nappy Roots went back to their jobs at the Cracker Barrel in Bowling Green.

Usher- Let Me See (ft. Rick Ross): So Jim Jonesin fucks with Clams Casino. Interesting. I predict as the industry starts to process the ambient sound listening to the radio will become more fun for me. I think a Ross/Clams collab would cause the universe to collapse on itself. Also Ross tip-toes the line between insanely inappropriate and awesome with a Chanel hoodie-Trayvon Martin punchline. Too soon Rick?

Kirko Bangz- Drank In My Cup (Remix) (ft. 2 Chainz & Juelz Santana): This shit cranks. Kirko’s Drake impression>Big Sean’s Drake impression. Hey, you know what would be cool? IF BORN TO LOSE BUILT TO WIN WOULD DROP. Seriously in danger of becoming the Dipset equivalent of Smile.

Nicki Minaj- Champion (ft. Nas, Drake & Young Jeezy): This Nicki Minaj song is pretty remarkable because it’s a track on Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded that doesn’t eat a dick with its eyes open.

Wu-Block- Batman: Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch rap over James Brown samples. Is it me or does that guy sound like Action Bronson?

Cam’ron- My Side of Town: 2Chainz vocal samples are the new Jay-Z vocal samples. The beat kind of sounds like that Vitamin C shit. My favorite Cam is the grateful, ruminative Cam.

Noreaga- Pussy Works: For all you aspiring rappers at home wondering how to make Fat Tape now that Jeremy Lin is injured and the Knicks have become a biblical parable, I’d suggest sampling Brian Mcknight and releasing a mixtape titled Crack on Steroids.

Future- Astronaut Chick: And of course you’re not getting away without some Future. At the moment “Astronaut Chick” is my favorite song on the album. It might be the instance where Future hits the weird hybrid aesthetic that is Pluto the hardest. It’s a tight and catchy number with an absolute monster of a second verse. The actual rapping on Pluto works like easter eggs scattered at random throughout the album. I think that Waldo quality the rapping has, its scarcity, contributes to how satisfying it is.
