Evan Nabavian declined Scarlett Johannson’s entreaties to star as the male romantic lead due to their complicated past.

For first world heads, indigenous tunes are most comfortably viewed through the lens of sutured loops. Madlib is our hermeneutical guide through canopies of Indian grooves and Oh No our Ethiopian safari leader. Side-props to Hubert Daviz’ Proceduri De Rutina, a similar trek through Romanian jazz and a personal favorite. We beat-heads circle the globe over the din of our dishwashing.

Jameszoo, a pro bono zoologist according to his label bio, contributes the Brazilian entry in the World Book of Beats with Guanyin Psittacines. Everything sounds lithe and organic thanks to layers of live electric piano and unidentified avian squawking, perhaps by his parrot Roberto. Freewheeling Wurlitzer meets a galumphing bassline on “A Dead Sun” while “Emper Hyacinths” pairs shakers and liberal fender rhodes. “Slaves Mass” is more to the tune of beat scene; a ritualistic slammer set to neolithic clattering. I’ll take a Jameszoo EP over a Ken Burns documentary any day.
