Son Raw: From Jack to Juke

From Jack to Juke: 25 Years of Ghetto House from Sonali Aggarwal on Vimeo.

A quick but thorough history lesson straight from the horses’ mouths. Rightfully placing Ghetto-House in America’s storied tradition of urban music rather than in a more nebulous international dance music context, this documentary makes a strong argument for discussing Chicago, Detroit and Baltimore music alongside Crunk and Hyphy rather than Disco or Deep House. Then again, I did find this link on Resident Advisor so perhaps the battle’s been lost. Nevertheless, the music covered here follows Son Raw’s golden rule of beats: it was made by young urban kids who didn’t give a fuck about mainstream appeal and who were determined to push their own sound forward, which almost always guarantees good stuff.

I think it’s time that this dubstep, juke, house, ghetto house, music dudes with white framed glasses balance an imaginary ball to ,get’s the respect and platform it deserves. It’s time to branch off the dubstep writers to their own site. To their credit they work hard as a motherfucker, as you can see from 2/3s of the posts on weiss repping this slop.

It’s tough when by far the nicest collection of hip hop writers out there (martini’s punk opuses included), are bookended by noone gives a fuck. I find it hard to believe there are people out there not named Sacho or Son Raw, that rock to both Roc Marciano and the DJ that plays sets with a mouse mask. I discovered Arthur Verocai, Blu, and The Sandwiches from this site and appreciate the variety of all things ill that are covered here, but enough is enough. The second I heard a group or producer that goes by the name of LHF, described as being RZA-influenced I had to say something. If RZA made music that resembled that shit I’d have to get my neck tat covered up. House/Dubstep is softer than drake. Softer than the dude in the Cloud Nothings post by Dougie. Get this shit out of here.
