Sad news for the world of beatmaking today as Parisian producer DJ Mehdi passes away. While his international audience knew him best as a new school electro producer affiliated with Ed Banger, I’ll always remember him for his early Hip-Hop work with French collective Mafia 1 K Fry. Combining soul samples and world music elements to distinctively up-tempo drums, his work with groups such as 113 was uniquely Parisian and helped French Hip-Hop find its own voice as it rose to commercial prominence at the turn of the millennium. DJ Mehdi didn’t actually produced Ideal J’s “Hardcore”, but Delta from Expression Direct. He produced most of the other tracks off the album “Le combat continue” though.
