Consigned to the Jive Records write-off bracket nearly twenty years ago, the album from Chicago’s Tha Grimm Teachaz has finally resurfaced  — complete with “I Getz,” the never-before-aired video featuring Son Doobie of Funkdoobiest. Compromised of PMDF (Prince Midnight Dark Force,) KDz (Kenny Dennis aka Tha Killa Deacon,) and DJ Koufie, you might recognize Kenny Dennis from his later attempts at rapping as a 48-year old white guy with a love of brats, Da Bulls, and onions.

But Grimm Teachaz was the first try, a group that almost made it until the crackers at Jive left them on the bench to push the Fu-Schnickens and Shaq-Fu. In fact, an encounter at the 1993 Jive showcase left an acrid taste in KD’s mouth (similar to when Brian Dennehy dies in Tommy Boy). After Grimm Teachaz performed, Shaq cracked a bad joke about Kenny’s mustache. From there it was on, and if you listen to There’s a Situation on the Homefront, you’ll hear plenty of disses at the Diesel. As for the tape, it sounds somewhere between Keith Murray and Lords of the Underground if they were heavily influenced by Bill Swerski’s Superfans.

This record was never meant to be released, but Kenny’s little brother Tanya (part of a failed attempt to make “Tanya” catch-on as a uni-sex name) discovered a pristine copy in a basement last year. Hence, it’s been remastered and placed on bandcamp. There are plans to release it on cassette later this year. Plus, a video for the never-before-seen Shaq diss, “Shazaam,” has been excavated and will be uploaded to YouTube soon. In the meantime, get super metaphysical when they’re dropping their rhymes — and never wear Reebox.
