Beyond songwriting, debruit ranks at the forefront of the contemporary bass junkies because of his chimerical sense of imagination and color. He heists records from Haiti, Nigeria, and Iran, and melts them into arabesque patterns. Most of his peers aspire to vaporous nostalgia or 23rd Century futurism, but debruit sounds wholly modern. The kind of person who will listen obscure African tunes, mid-90s New York brickbat rap, and whatever the latest thing is burrowing from the London underground. Let it simmer and cool and recombine into something singular. The video for Mezde is basically a perfect distillation of his synesthesia: vibrant color and will animation that far exceeds the screen saver cliches that pass for modern day music videos.
