Onakabazien – “That Young Shit”

That epic deadbeat Hannibal Moncrief promised a fourth and final installment of his SXSW adventures, but his phone is dead and the only communication I’ve had from him in the last two days was a cryptic text message that read: Bury Me a G. Maybe there will be more, maybe there won’t. In the interim, I offer That Young Shit a record of dusty sun-warped beats courtesy of Onakabazien, created entirely from Neil Young samples. Scoff at the gimmicky nature of the concept all you want, you can’t ignore the excellence of its execution. While his name might not ring bells, the Toronto producer has been flipping the likes of Sun Ra, Ethiopiques, and Kraut Rock since before it became Stones Throw’s bread and butter. It shows. I’ll sell the first release in his Intended Disclipline series, the way it was sold to me: “it’s on some Beat Konducta series/Donuts type shit…30 cuts in 40 minutes (plus a Gravediggaz remix bonus).” A ripe harvest for sure.

Bullion’s Pet Sounds: Songs in the Key of Dee is also excellent.
