I’ve avoided writing about Joy Orbison because until recently, I was certain that it was a Traveling Wilburys-spoofing porn flick in the vein of “Nailin’ Palin.’ How wrong I was. In reality, Joy Orbison is a 22-year old Londoner named Peter O’ Grady, who has become a nascent force in dubstep off the strength of his infectious single, “Hyph Mngo.”
His latest single, “BRKLYN CLLNG” finds him again averse to vowels, and instead drawn to Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade. I suppose this means that ecstasy would help. Yet I question Joy’s knowledge of the Southern California rave scene. Everyone knows that Knott’s Berry Farm was the spot that redefined the meaning of both Woodstock, the Festival, and Woodstock, the whistling yellow bird who is Snoopy’s best friend. Either way, I imagine Disney does not approve.

kinda surprised you hadn’t written about this guy yet. his remix of four tet’s “love cry” and “HYPH MNGO” are two of my favorite songs of the year by far.

I’m honestly not quite sold on this guy yet. Too polite and proper in the face of the darker, dirtier stuff that the critics have been dismissing. Nothing wrong with a ravier return to Garage and 2-step but not all it’s made out to be either.
Probably sounds fantastic at a California rave though.
